Sustainable Exhibition Design

As part of BIO27’s commitment to reflect on our own impact and legacy, exhibition designers Medprostor architects and graphic designers Studio Kruh and AA were briefed to respond to the Super Vernaculars theme and aim to reduce the biennial’s environmental footprint.

Medprostor chose to build the exhibition from firewood, a widely-available resource in Slovenia which is 59% covered in forest and where 39% of households use firewood as their heating source. The structures are secured by reusable straps, and the firewood is on loan to be returned to the supplier for sale at the end of the biennial. This low-impact, low-budget design challenges conventional exhibition design aesthetics as well as established commercial systems.
